“Elmhurst Short Stay continues to support people to live their best life”

If you or someone you care for are looking for somewhere safe and caring for a short-term stay, Elmhurst could be just the place.

Elmhurst provides respite or emergency care for older people and it has kept its ‘Good’ rating following the recent Care Quality Commission* (CQC) inspection, with ‘Good’ scores in all five key areas.

Elmhurst was described by the CQC as having “a homely feel, looked very clean and well-maintained and had a good standard of décor and furnishings, a conservatory and pleasant gardens”.

There’s a good rapport between customers and staff, with people describing staff as “smashing” and “lovely” and speaking highly of the “visible and approachable” managers. Staff commented “I love it here” and make every effort to provide individually tailored, personalised care plans that consider people’s own relationships, history and aspirations and make them partners in their own care.

The inspector also commented that people are encouraged to do as much for themselves as is safe and are asked for their preferences on every aspect of their stay, from activities they enjoy to the food they like to eat and even their wishes for the end of their life.

There’s also a regular and varied activities programme including arts and crafts, film nights, poetry, quizzes, stretching and meditation available to anyone who wishes to join in, with staff making special efforts to spend time individually with anyone who cannot take part. People’s communication and sensory needs are carefully considered; staff work regularly with the same people to get to know them well and to prevent anyone becoming isolated.

Elmhurst staff will do their best to adapt to people’s needs; the report noted that when two sisters couldn’t get their usual specialist respite care, Elmhurst staff adapted a lounge to suit them, taking specialist advice and bringing in extra, skilled staff to support them.

Registered Manager, Ruth Holder explained “I’m thrilled with this outcome and particularly delighted with the comments in the report from customers and their families. What matters to me is that the people we support are at the heart of what we do and that they have a great time when they stay with us at Elmhurst.”

Well done to everyone for their continually excellent work, reflecting the values in everything that they do and supporting people to live their best life whilst at Elmhurst.
