Our staff recently took part in a one-day intensive interaction training course delivered by Alison from Total Communication.
The session gave valuable insight into good communication approaches that support people with autism, learning disabilities and other communication needs.
What is Intensive Interaction training?
It’s a communication approach designed to support people with communication difficulties to develop communication and social interaction skills so we can ensure people we support feel understood and their needs are being met.
Why was this training rolled out to staff?
To give staff the opportunity to learn and practise new communication methods so they feel confident when giving support.
Lisa, Learning Disability Day Services deputy manager, took part in the training and shared a bit of information around what the training was like:
How was the training delivered?
Alison used real life examples and videos to help staff understand how to build a connection with someone who has communication needs. She brought a wealth of knowledge and expertise, explaining the principles of intensive interaction in a way that was both easy to understand and immediately applicable in our services. Her approachable and supportive style encouraged participation, enabling staff to feel confident in asking questions and sharing their own experiences. It was engaging, practical and clearly structured, making it accessible for staff at all levels of experience.
What did staff find most engaging or surprising?
Staff found the training particularly insightful in recognising the importance of being responsive, patient and able to adapt to each person’s communication style.
Has this training changed the way staff work?
It’s strengthened staff skills, improved understanding of communication approaches, and reinforced our commitment to supporting people with respect.
Many members of staff have said it’s already influenced their interactions, helping them to slow down, observe more carefully and engage in a more person-centred way. The experience was extremely valuable to the team.
