What is Systematic Instruction Training?
Training in Systematic Instruction (TSI) is a way to teach people who find traditional learning difficult, including people with learning disabilities and autism. The TSI course teaches staff the skills needed to help people learn in ways that work best for them.
Donna, who works in our Supported Living service, went on a training course that teaches support staff the skills they need to support people with learning disabilities and autism in a way that is right for them. She's tells us what she's learnt and how the training will help her in her role.
What were you expecting from the training before it started?
To learn how to effectively break down tasks to support people to learn new skills. The training exceeded my expectations!
What did you hope it would help you achieve in your job?
To be more enabling when increasing the independence of people I support and to have more opportunities to help staff and people we support when building on their skills.
What do you find difficult about your job that you hoped this training would support you with?
Finding new ways to encourage people to engage with support when they are hesitant to.
Do you think the training will help you to do what you expected?
Yes, it was a lot more detailed than I expected, which was good. I found working with people we support during the training to be very powerful and insightful. It helped me understand better ways we can help people we support and staff to promote independence by teaching new skills.
What have you learnt?
That without realising it, we can underestimate people we support and be their biggest obstacle. We need to take responsibility for upskilling people in a measurable way that ensures they can achieve.
What was the highlight of the training for you?
Working with people we support and seeing how much of an impact the training had on people we support. It made it easier to relate to people individually and helped me see how I could use this every day.
Did anything about the training surprise you?
I was surprised by how detailed it was, but I can see why it needs to be that way to fully understand the process and how to do it correctly.
What did you think about the people we support being involved in the training?
It made it much easier to see how to apply the training in my service. It made it more impactful and showed what's possible when you adapt your approach to support people with different abilities.
