As a short stay (respite) carer, you would offer people a break from their normal lives, whether it's to give their usual carer a break or just for a change of scene. It can be a regular or an ad hoc arrangement. Sometimes emergency respite is needed. The support will take place at your home, so the person you support would come to you for each session.

This job role can be flexible unless you decide to have a regular placement with a particular person. You might, for example, decide to be available for emergency or one-off short stay support.

Even with regular placements, this can be a really good way to fit support in around your job, studies or family life while still earning and giving something back.

Here are examples of what three different people might want from a short stay carer with Bury Shared Lives. Please contact us for up to date placement details and to become a carer with us.

Jane is in her sixties and uses a wheelchair. Her husband does most of her care and she'd like one weekend of respite each month, to give him a break. She loves knitting, scrapbooking and is a keen gardener - she grows her own veg! Ideally she'd like to stay from Friday evening until Sunday evening, but is happy to go home earlier on Sundays if needed.

Alex is 19 and is studying at college. He'd like one night of respite each week and he'd like his carer to collect him from college, take him home with them for the evening and drop him back at college the next day. Alex has epilepsy. He loves watching football and motor racing on tv and he'd like to learn how to cook simple dishes.

Sue is in her thirties and misses her mum since she died. Sue lives with her dad and brothers and she'd like to have two weekends each month of respite, from Friday evening until Sunday lunchtime, staying with someone she can do girly things with like watching romcoms, going shopping and having spa evenings.
