What is Systematic Instruction Training?

Training in Systematic Instruction (TSI) is a way to teach people who find traditional learning difficult, including people with learning disabilities and autism. The TSI course teaches staff the skills needed to help people learn in ways that work best for them.

Amita, who works in our Persona Employment Pathways services, went on a training course that teaches support staff the skills they need to support people with learning disabilities and autism in a way that is right for them. She tells us what she's learnt and how the training will help her in her role.

What did you hope it would help you achieve in your job?

I wanted to gain an understanding of systematic instruction and learn how I can use this in my role. I hoped the training would boost my confidence in providing person-centred support and dealing with challenges.

What do you find difficult about your job that you hoped this training would support you with?

At times, not having the ability to support others. The skills I've gained have given me confidence to teach and support going forward.

Do you think the training will help you to do what you expected?

The training has given me skills and a better understanding of the importance of:

  • learning
  • teaching
  • communication
  • consistency
  • person-centred thinking

I feel more confident in applying these new skills - I think they will help me respond better.

What have you learnt?

The importance of teaching, how to see things for another person's point of view, and how small changes can make a big difference.

What was the highlight of the training for you?

How interactive the training was and the use of real life examples. This made it easy to relate the learning to my role.

Did anything about the training surprise you?

I was pleasantly surprised by how engaging and hands-on it was. The teachers were very knowledgeable and supportive, and the discussions and examples really helped with reflection and shared learning.

What did you think about the people we support being involved in the training?

Having people we support involved was extremely valuable. It gave a genuine insight into their experiences and reinforced the importance of person-centred support. It made the training more meaningful and reminded me why our roles matter so much.
