John has always loved DIY. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2022 and missed being creative, so in 2024 he and his wife Sue found a local men’s group that does woodwork. Sue couldn't support him as the group is for men only and after the first session, he was told he needed someone to go with him.
Sue came to Bury Shared Lives to ask if we could support John, and we knew just the person! The following week John went back to the group with his Shared Lives carer, Joe, and their friendship has gone from strength to strength; not only are they still going to the men's group together, they have made the most beautiful planters for services across Bury (you might spot one at The Green Café!). Joe's support has also been increased after some changes with John’s dementia.
Shared Lives' support means that John can continue to enjoy his woodwork skills in a safe place, while Sue has a break. We'll support both John and Sue with this beautiful friendship for as long as we are needed.
