Making time to enjoy the outdoors and embrace nature is extremely important to our health and wellbeing. That's why we pride ourselves in being green and encouraging both staff and people we support to start gardening and spend time outside.
Take a look at the vast amount of projects we've worked on over the past few months...
Over the past few years, Bolton Road's allotment became overgrown and was not usable. The team were keen to change this and have spent the past few months working tirelessly with people we support to transform the allotment.
People we support at Bolton Road have shown an interest in connecting with nature and plenty of gardening activities, so they've had a lot of fun with the changes they've done so far!
They've now got a compost bin, flower baskets, a herb garden and some wheelchair accessible plant beds. The new look allotment has enabled the service to upcycle, recycle, and have their own sensory garden.
We've been told: "People we support have been working together and building on their relationships. Anne has never been to our allotment as it wasn't wheelchair accessible before, but now it is and she's been able to get involved and learn about seeding."

As part of the Ageing in Place Project, Steven Greason, community engagement manager, completed a community audit and found there was a lack of safe spaces for people to enjoy in Moorside. When The Green Community Café reopened in early 2024, after it had been closed during lockdown, the garden was reopened too. Residents of Moorside were keen to get hands-on in transforming the garden into a community space for all to enjoy.
They've made some amazing progress and now lots of beautiful flowers growing, delicious fruits and vegetables growing, a sensory garden and a small pond has been installed. The garden, along with the café, acts as a community hub for people of all ages to enjoy so feel free to come down and say hello!

As part of our recent Green Themed Quarter, Carmen Gillon-Weerasinghe, our green ambassador, created a blog to help staff create their own green indoor space. In her blog, she talks about why indoor plans are more than just a decorative trend and shares tips for choosing and caring for the perfect plant for your space.
We learned what the benefits of indoor plants are:
And were given some suggestions for the best indoor plants for beginners:

Just looking at nature can help us feel calmer and it has an even bigger impact when we're in it. Spending time in nature is proven to be good for our mental health and when that's good, our physical health improves too. Getting active can help reduce short and long term physical effects that negative stress has on your body and mind and it doesn't have to take long.
On this page, we share:
- articles on how nature can help with your health and wellbeing
- a video for forest bathing to help you relax
- ideas on how to connect with nature each season
Some months, it can be harder to get outside and reap the benefits of nature.
That's why we've shared some helpful booklets with simple suggestions for activities in each season, such as:
- Spring - find a nice spot outdoors and draw what you see
- Summer - instead of exercising inside, go for a walk, run or bike ride
- Autumn - make the most out of the darker days and do some moon and star gazing
- Winter - bring nature inside with some indoor plants or frame a beautiful landscape on your wall
These booklets also include different ways to use your 5 senses each season, top tips, people's stories and lovely quotes.
